Tristan Wirfs, Penei Sewell, Lane Johnson and Top NFL OT Rankings by Coaches, Execs

San Francisco 49ers star Trent Williams ceded the No. 1 spot in the annual offensive tackle rankings from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler after four years at the top.

Fowler listed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Tristan Wirfs in first place after speaking with coaches, executives and scouts. Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions stayed at No. 2 and was followed by the Philadelphia Eagles' Lane Johnson and then Williams in fourth.

Wirfs made history last year, becoming the first player to earn an All-Pro nod at each of the two tackle positions. The 2020 first-round pick started his career on the right side and has since shifted full time to left tackle.

"He doesn't have the flashy plays that Sewell has, but everything is so easy to him," an NFC executive told Fowler. "He can handle whatever you want out there and won't look particularly stressed doing it. Rare combination of size and athleticism."

Even though the start of the 2025 regular season is still months away, Wirfs may struggle to retain his position in Fowler's rankings next year. He recently had knee surgery and could be on the physically unable to perform list to open the campaign. A PUP designation would sideline him for a minimum of four games.

An ankle injury is the biggest reason why Williams slipped four spots. He was out for the final seven games of the season.

The 11-time Pro Bowler continues perform at an elite level when healthy. Father Time might be starting to catch up to the 36-year-old in terms of his durability, though.

Another thing Fowler's rankings highlight is why running back Saquon Barkley signed with the Eagles last offseason. Philly has two top-five tackles in Johnson and Jordan Mailata, which is a vastly situation than Barkley ever had with the New York Giants.

"He's kind of the gold standard now — technique, smarts and probably the most instinctive of them all," one personnel executive said of Johnson. "He's a perfect product of that system. He's dealt with a lot, from mental health to injuries, and he's come out of it better than ever."

Plenty of fans made jokes at the Giants' expense, particularly because team co-owner John Mara foresaw how good Barkley might be in Philly.

There's little chance the dynamic running back goes for more than 2,000 yards on the ground if he had remained in the Big Apple, though. New York may not necessarily have been wrong to watch him walk in free agency since it didn't possess the offensive structure to maximize his skill set.

The Eagles and Barkley were a perfect marriage.

Because he set the bar so high, it's tough to see him improving on his 2024 production. With Philadelphia's line mostly unchanged, he should be able to put together another solid year.
